The well known autonomous centre “Rote Flora” in Hamburg with its neighbouring historicism style building at the Schulterblatt street in Hamburg Sternschanze. This street is the centre of the alternative quarter Schanzenviertel in Hamburg. It once was a simple rural street leading from Hamburg towards Eimsbüttel. During the 19th century the street became a shopping and entertainment street with a first summer theatre at this spot in the mid 19th century. In 1888 the Concerthaus Flora was errected in the same place, which experienced a very changeful time over the next century with a lot of different usages. During the 70s the top level of the building was removed and in the 1980s the main theatre hall behind the entrance was torn down to clear the space for a new Musical Theatre.
That was the beginning of protests against these plans which culminated in the occupation of the remaining building in november 1989. Since then it became a centre of the autonomic left scene of Hamburg and played an important role in the city as a cultural and meeting point of the left scene. Furthermore the Rote Flora became well known nation wide following political actions of the radical left, including the protests and demonstrations during the 2017 G20 Hamburg summit.
