Goethestrasse / Augustusplatz

This is the street view of the Goethestrasse along the Augustusplatz in Leipzig as a street panorama. Starting on the left we first see the City-Skyscraper, formerly called the “Uniriese” when it was an administrative building of the Leipzig University. With 143 metres height it is the highest building in eastern germany (if you don’t count the TV-tower in Berlin). Further on we see the main building (Albertinum) of the university and the Café Felsche, both newly built now. Both were heavily destroyed in the war and later torn down during GDR times. Then we have a view into the Grimmaische Strasse, a major shopping street in the city centre. The first building of the following block is the Königsbau (King’s building – the former big store Bamberger and Herz). The Kroch-Highrise in the middle of the panorama is the oldest highrise in Leipzig. It was inspired by the clock tower Torre dell’Orologio in Venice. Further along the Goethestrasse we see the former seat of the Dresdner Bank. The next building, which stands opposite the Leipzig Opera which edges the Augustusplatz, is another university building, housing the students office. Finally we see the rectorate building of the Leipzig University and the free space following it is the construction place of the planned Unister-Headquarter. The Kroch-Building in the middle today houses the egyptian museum of the university. On top of it is an impressive bell striking mechanism. Below this the latin lines OMNIA VINCIT LABOR are inscribed (Hard work conquers all).
