Wettinerstrasse begins at a crossroads at the old marketsquare (Altmarkt). Its buildings, with their diverse façade decorations, reflect the growth of the industrial town of Aue around 1900. In 1842, the street was still called “Am Mühlgraben”. In 1906, a tourist guide describes a street with “metropolitan flair”. Not only the trade with delicacies, groceries, drugstore, pharmacy – but also the butcher’s and bakeries trade was represented several times among many other shops Restaurants such as the “Wettiner Hof” or “Café Carola” offered the inhabitants of the town a varied cultural programme with a concert hall, theatre and cinema. The well-known cutlery factories Hutschenreuter and Gottlieb Wellner, among others, also settled in the further course of the street.
The Wettinerplatz square on the street was landscaped with a park donated by Ernst Papst. A travel guide from 1906 describes it as the “most beautiful street in the city”.
