A nightlife view of the Calle Macedonio Alcalá in the mexican city Oaxaca. Oaxaca is the capital of the state by the same name and the historical old town is a UNESCO world heritage site since 1987. Officially the city is called Oaxaca de Juárez since 1872 and has a population of about a quarter of a million (2010). Before 1872 the spanish colonial city was called Antequera.
Calle Macedonia Alcalá is named after the well known mexican musician and songwriter Macedonio Alcalá Prieto (1831-1869, Oaxaca). there is also a Teatro Macedonio Alcalá in the city centre. To the left we see the Church of (Iglesia de) Santo Domingo de Guzman and the adjoining dominican monastery built in the first half of the 16th century. The former monastery is now used as a museum and culture centre of Oaxaca.
