This street block is situated along the Quai de Rive Neuve on the southern shore of the old port (Vieux Port) of Marseille. Dominating it is the large new hotel building of the Radisson Blu but also the building of the “Theatre La Criée”. Originally it was the fish market hall of the old port of Marseille. The facade was created in the early 20th century and above the portal it reads “Criee Libre Aux Poissons”, which means free fish market.
After the building was conversed into a theatre with two theatre halls the National Theatre of Marseille opened here in 1981. The National Theatre of Marseille (La Criée) emerged from the former Comédie de Provence which was founded in Aix-en-Provence in 1950. After arguments about the venue it moved to Marseille in 1969.
