In Bochum, VFL Bochum’s home ground, traditionally known as the Ruhrstadion (officially Vonovia Ruhrstadion), is located on Castroper Strasse, around one kilometre north-east of the city centre. As it is located on a main access road, the building is therefore very present in the cityscape and, with its brutalist architecture and prominent stands, has an impact on both passing motorists and passers-by. The best view of the stadium is probably enjoyed by the guards at the prison directly opposite.
Football has been played here, in the Grumme quarter of the city, continuously since 1911. The current stadium building has been errected in 1979 and was, among other things, the venue for the 2011 Women’s World Cup. Another highlight at the stadium are the regular concerts by Herbert Grönemeyer, who has regularly given sold-out concerts here since 1985 and always enjoys celebrating about his VFL with his Bochum anthem.
