This is near the start of Queen West, part of downtown. This picture was taken in June 2010, the Sunday morning on the weekend of a G20 meeting in Toronto, not far from this location. Only 18 hours earlier Toronto police tested out kettling tactics on protesters at Queen and Spadina. The yellow sign on Steve’s Music, a green storefront near the middle of the block, was blackened by a burning police car that was only removed hours before this was taken. A few shops are boarded.
In 2023 the Portraits of Queen West: Spadina to Bathurst is being published. It is the result of a 20 year project documenting the 5km of Queen St. West, one of Toronto’s most famous streets, known for its diverse culture, fashion and music scenes. Photographer/graphic designer Kevin Steele is now assembling these photographs in a series of books. The first book, Portraits of Queen West: Spadina to Bathurst is now available for preorder online.
