The Hotel Le Negresco which has shaped Nizza’s cityscape for more than a hundred years now, is located on the prominent Promenade des Anglais on the shores of the Mediterranean in Nice, France.
History of the Negresco
The luxury hotel, named after the Romanian entrepeneur Henri Negresco (1868-1920), was opened in 19012. The building was designed by architect Édouard Niermans (1859-1928) in the Belle Époque style. Until the First World War, it was a favourite meeting place for aristocrats and the international aristocracy. In 1928, it was one of the founding members of the renowned hotel association The Leading Hotels of the World. It is also known for its extensive art collection of classical and contemporary painters. During the First World War, the hotel served as a military hospital, and in 2016, after the Islamist terrorist attack on the Promenade des Anglais, wounded people were once again treated here.
The Promenade des Anglais (Promenade of the English) is a luxurious symbol of Mediterranean tourism. It is named after the wealthy English who spent their winters here from the late 18th century onwards.
