The Poststadion with its symmetrical, expressionism inspired main façade on the grandstand building, dates back to 1929 and is located in the spacious Moabit sports park. Although it is located very central and only 700 metres north of Berlin’s main railway station, it is not widely known as a stadium building. Due to its location in the middle of sports facilities, hardly any passers-by will stroll along and there hasn’t been a successful football club playing here for a long time. However, the building itself has survived almost a century largely unchanged.
Until the construction of the Olympic Stadium (Olympiastadion), the Poststadion was considered Berlin’s most important sports venue, so much so that the final matches of the German Football Championship were played here in the early 1930s. Three international matches of the German national team and matches of the 1936 Olympic Football Tournament were also played here. Later, it was the home ground for many Berlin clubs below the two national leagues (including Hertha BSC). Another highlight of the early years was the boxing match between Max Schmeling and Paulino Uzcudun at the Poststadion in 1935.
