Peterstraße is, historically, the southern main street leading into the city of Kempen. Coming from the former Petertor gate in the south, it runs northwards, bends towards the Heilig-Geist-Kapelle chapel and merges into Buttermarkt. Today, it is one of the main shopping streets in the city of Kempen and is also characterised by several restaurants. Here we are looking at its western sstreet front in its southern section. Most of the buildings date from the 19th century, while some of the brick buildings are older.

Kolpinghaus and Haus Ludowig
On the left of the panorama we see the modern Kolping House and the Ludowigs House to the right. The latter is named after the Ludowigs merchant family from Cologne, who moved to Kempen in the 19th century. The three-storey, seven-axis merchant’s house was built in 1789 by the merchant Franz Lambertz. He later became mayor of the city’s French administration. The Kolpinghaus on the far left was built in 1981 by Heinz Cobbers, the architect of the Kempen town hall. It replaced the former Kolpinghaus on Hessenwall and also features the original statue of St Joseph from the old Kolping House on its facade.
