City of Music Bayreuth
The city of Bayreuth is very famous in the field of classical music. From all over the world, visitors come each year to enjoy the Bayreuth Festival, which is dedicated to the composer Richard Wagner.
Margravial Opera House
Also, the Opera House attracts tourists, being one of Europe’s most beautiful baroque theatres. On demand of margravine Wilhelmine, Bayreuth became a cultural metropolis during the 18th century. Thereby her favorite project, the Opera House, has been designed by Joseph Saint-Pierre on the outside, while the imposing interior is the work of Giuseppe und Carlo Galli-Bibiena. The theatre building has been on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list since 2012. The neighbouring buildings also include the Hotel Goldener Anker, whose façade sandstone was donated by the Margravine herself in order to appropriately influence the surroundings of the opera house.
Redoutenhaus
To the left of the Margravial Opera House we see the historic Redoutenhaus (old German for ballroom) with the “Café an der Oper”. The latter was closed at the end of 2016 and the Redoutenhaus is currently being converted into an opera house museum (Opernhausmuseum) with a World Heritage Information Centre.
