The panorama shows the banks of the Salzach and Rudolfskai in Salzburg. On this side lies the left bank of Salzburg’s historic city centre and with it the most important architectural monuments of Austria’s fourth largest city. The banks of the Salzach are characterised by the beauty of the river and the city’s historic architecture. Charming buildings from different eras stretch along the banks of the Salzach river, including medieval towers, baroque churches and traditional Salzburg houses.
Backside to the river
Nevertheless, here we are practically looking at the backs of the buildings on the river. While cars rush along Rudolfskai in the foreground, behind the buildings are the narrow Getreidegasse, Kranzlmarkt and Judengasse (right to left), which are characterised by streams of visitors. Here you will also find the countless cosy cafés, small shops and craft shops for which Salzburg is famous.
Outstanding buildings
But we can actually see several of Salzburg’s architectural monuments standing out in the background. We start on the right with the dome of the Kollegienkirche and its two towers in the background. To the left is the Old Town Hall with one side facing the river and its town hall tower jutting out. Further to the left, we look through Klampfergasse to the steeple of the Franciscan Church, which stands almost 300 metres from the banks of the Salzach. A little further on in the left half of the panorama we see Salzburg Cathedral with its dome and the two towers on Residenzplatz. Right next to it, the tower of the Neue Residenz (now the Salzburg Museum) rises up on the same square. And in the background, the Hohensalzburg Fortress, which characterises the cityscape, towers above the city. Finally, a little further to the left, the church tower of Nonnberg Abbey rises up behind the Mozartsteg bridge.
