The station Markt is the central stop of the Leipzig City-Tunnel, directly below Leipzigs’ market square. During the construction of the station the Untergrundmessehalle (underground trade fair building) below the marketplace was destructed to build the new station in its place, but much deeper (23 metres). However, the historical entrance from the 1920s in Art Deco style is still existing and provides the southern entrance to the new underground station. The architecture strikes with its enormous height, the station is using terracotta plates as its facade and on the upper level two balconies provide a view of the track system. The station was designed by the architects Kellner-Schleich-Wunderling Architekten + Stadtplaner (ksw-architekten.com).
