The Erzgebirgsstadion (Ore Mountains Stadium) is located on the northern outskirts of Aue, nestled in the Lößnitz Valley. The architecture of the new stadium of local team FC Erzgebirge Aue is very functional. However, if you descend the wide staircase into the valley towards the stadium, the building, designed in the club’s purple colours, looks like an exquisite box of chocolates that has been placed in the beautiful mountain landscape of the Erzgebirge. There is also some mining symbolism and the inviting slogan “Welcome to the pit” – both references to the origins of the BSG (company sports association) Wismut Aue.
The greatest sporting successes were achieved in the former Otto Grotewohl Stadium at a time when the Aue footballers had to play as a football section under the name SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt. They brought the GDR championship title to Aue three times (1956, 57, 59) and reached the quarter-finals of the European Cup of Champions in 1959. In the new millennium, Aue won the Saxon Football Cup four times.
