Obere Calwer Straße 36-66 Stuttgart
Obere Calwer Straße is one of the most characteristic old town streets in the centre of Stuttgart and forms an important historical and functional link within the city centre. Our panorama shows the north-west side of Obere Calwer Straße, which stretches for almost 150 metres between Lange Straße and Rotebühlplatz. This southern section runs parallel to the well-known Königstraße shopping street, but is much more strongly characterised by gastronomic use and a diverse architectural heritage. The Calwer Passage, a modern shop and office complex with a glass façade facing Theodor-Heuss-Straße, runs along the entire length of the street at the rear. The street itself is named after the small town of Calw, located around 30 kilometres west of Stuttgart.
Our panorama above currently shows the completed right-hand half of the street. You can see the still unfinished complete street on the right under the detailed pictures.
Redevelopment of Calwer Straße
Today, Obere Calwer Straße is one of the last remaining historic promenades in the city centre and, with its numerous street cafés, restaurants and owner-managed shops, is a popular meeting place for locals and visitors alike. Its origins and development reflect the history of middle-class Stuttgart in exemplary fashion. Originally, this entire street block was threatened with demolition in the 1970s – a plan that was only prevented by public commitment and the ‘Save Calwer Strasse!’ campaign. As a result, numerous buildings were carefully restored, some of them reconstructed, and harmoniously complemented by modern additions. The Calwer Passage (built in 1978) itself has also recently been listed, which emphasises the design and historical significance of this area.
