The home ground of Chemnitzer FC is located around two kilometres north-east of the market square between the wilhelminian Sonnenberg residential area and the Zeisigwald forest. The main façade of the new stadium building (2016), which faces the city, cleverly uses the sky-blue club colour and the club emblem to create an identity in the Chemnitz cityscape.
The old Dr Kurt Fischer Stadium (also known as Fischerwiese) was the home ground of FC Karl-Marx-Stadt (now Chemnitzer FC), which won the GDR championship in 1967. In 1993, Chemnitzer FC reached the semi-finals of the DFB Cup. However, the club also regularly played at the larger Sportforum (then Ernst-Thälmann-Stadion) during the GDR era, where international matches as well as GDR internationals were played.
