The eastside of the marketplace in Werdau in a linear panorama. The prominent building towering above everything else is Werdau’s town hall. The neo-baroque building was inaugurated in april 1911 with attendance of the saxon king and is regarded one of saxony’s finest town halls. The whole ensemble of buildings around the market square is a listed area for conservation. Unfortunately that cannot cover the fact that the economic and demographic development of recent years has not been only positive, a fact that most small towns in eastern germany had to suffer from. Hence even at the market square you can find empty shop fronts. Werdau was first mentioned in 1304 and developed into a regional textile production centre along the axis Reichenbach – Altenburg – Leipzig. Being situated along the river Pleiße and next to the Werdau forest another important economic factor was the rafting of timber towards Leipzig.

The Vestmannaeyjar (eng. Westman Islands) is an vulcanic archipelago off the south coast of iceland. The largest and the only inhabited island is Heimaey, the town is also called Vestmannaeyjar and has about 4.000 inhabitants. For centuries the municipality is dependent on the rich fishing grounds around the islands. Heimaey became internationally known in 1973 when the Eldfell volcano errupted for about 6 months and destroyed half the town and threatened to destroy the harbour. An international cooling project with sea water stopped the Lava and saved the harbour. The 5.000 people of Vestmannaeyjar at the time had to be evacuated for several months.

Originally the area was developed by the Sächsische Wollgarnfabrik, which bought it in 1875 and transformed it into europes largest architectural complex in Wilhelminian style (german Gründerzeit era). The grand architecture we see in this photography montage by far exceeded the typical industry architecture at the time. The complex was realised by architects Pfeiffer & Händel (after 1893 Händel & Franke). The complex, which was united with other productions into the VEB Buntgarnwerke Leipzig in 1969, today is germany’s largest industrial monument. Meanwhile the complex has been redeveloped into the Elster-Park, which includes commercial spaces, restaurants, recreational facilities and flats (Elsterlofts).

It is the middle Gracht of the Grachtengordel with the Herengracht positioned inwards and the Prinsengracht situated outwards parallely. The Keizersgracht was built in 1612 and prolonged to its final length in 1658. It is named after the roman-german emperor Maximilian I. (1459-1519) and it is the widest of the central Grachts of Amsterdam. In typical Amsterdam style the Gracht is lined by patrician houses with its unique facade variety. Thanks to a very cold day in february the gracht in this panorama is completely frozen and right of the Leidsestraat ice skaters are dominating the view.

This is the western facade front of the central street part. A rich butcher from the 15th century, Jan Vodička, who owned a large building in the street gave it its name. Today the street is still very vibrant, with lots of shops, pubs and the Světozor cinema, however it is also very interesting for its architecture with impressive buildings as can be seen in this street panorama but also elsewhere in the street. The prominent building in the middle of this street panorama, Vodičkova 736/17, was probably built by the czech architect Josef Hlavka as the seat of the Czech National Academy (any further information wellcome).

It is situated on the inner city circle of Leipzig, opposite the tram station Goerdelerring and the commercial complex “Höfe am Brühl“. We see a part of the outward side of the Leipziger Ring (Leipzig city circle), which was the setting for the 1989 Leipzig monday demonstrations that ultimately led to the fall of the wall in Berlin. This street block includes the evangelic reformed church of Leipzig (right side), the hotel Fürstenhof (middle) and the former Ring-Messehaus left of the hotel. It was used for trade fairs until 1992 and with an area of 20.000 square metres it was the biggest innercity trade fair building in the world. Meanwhile it is being rebuild into a hotel. In 2012 it was back in public focus for a moment, when a graffiti crew sprayed an overdimensioned “RCS” bombing onto the facade, which led to an even bigger facade graffiti by a rivalling group on the nearby former Robotron building. Media picked this up as the Leipzig Graffiti-War. However the RCS Graffito was visible only some days until the owner veiled the facade again.

These are typical twin houses from the early 20th century. An exception is the building in the middle with three house units which mirrored the so called Siedlerheim across the street. This building was also an expanded construction with shops and a restaurant. It was partly blown up in november 2011 by the NSU (National Socialist Underground) and later completely torn down after crime investigations were finnished. The NSU has been hiding from authorities in that building for some years, which resulted in generally referring to it as the Zwickau Terror Cell.

A linear street panorama of the final section of the Oranienburger Strasse in Berlin before ending at Friedrichstrasse (to the right). The most prominent building here is the former Kunsthaus Tacheles (Art House Tacheles). The image was shot on the 25th of march 2012, the Art House was finally closed in September 2012 to serve interests of the investors. Originally it was part of the Friedrichstrassenpassage (built 1907-1908), a passage way building stretching through the backside area towards Friedrichstrasse. It was initally used as a big department store (for example used by Wertheim). Partially damaged in WWII the buildings further decayed during GDR times and large parts of it were pulled down in the 1980s. The section on the Oranienburger Strasse was the only remaining part, whi9ch was saved from destruction by the art group Tacheles, which occupied the building in february 1990 and went on to use it as an art house. During the following two decades the complex gained importance in the Berlin Art Scene providing ateliers for artists, event spaces, exhibition spaces, a cinema and gastronomy.
